You can hide some information from your Gravatar profile without deleting it. Hidden information does not appear on your public profile page, but it remains publicly available through the Gravatar API.
Anyone who queries the API—including websites, apps, and services that use Gravatar—may still be able to retrieve this information.
You can hide information from public display
Visibility controls let you decide what publicly appears on your Gravatar profile page. Depending on the section, you can hide:
- Links
- Photos
- Verified accounts
- Interests
- Contact information
- Wallet addresses
Hiding one of these sections changes how your profile page is displayed. It does not make the information private or remove it from your Gravatar profile data.
In the Verified accounts section of your profile, you can hide individual verified accounts while leaving the rest of it visible. A hidden account is not publicly displayed on your profile page, but it remains publicly available through the Gravatar API.
Why the API Still Includes Hidden Information
The Gravatar profile API allows websites and applications to retrieve public profile information. The editor’s visibility controls are intended to customize the layout of your Gravatar profile page; they are not privacy controls for API data.
Keeping Information Private
Avoid adding sensitive or confidential information to your Gravatar profile, even if you plan to hide it from the profile page. If you do not wish for sensitive or confidential information to be potentially queried via the Gravatar API, it must be removed entirely from your profile instead of only being hidden.
- Open the Gravatar profile editor.
- Open the section containing the information.
- Delete the content, clear the relevant fields, or disconnect the account as appropriate.
- Save your changes.
Make Your Entire Profile Private
If you do not want your profile information publicly accessible—including through Gravatar’s public API—turn off Public profile in your privacy settings.
Your avatar (image) visibility settings can be adjusted separately from your profile privacy. You can have a private profile and still have a public avatar for use on websites, apps, and services that use Gravatar. In other words; avatar requests are separate from profile API requests, and they are based upon your public avatar setting.
